This book focuses on a less well-known area of Gandhi's interest: his engagement with Jesus and Christianity. Throughout his life, Gandhi conducted an ongoing dialogue with Christian believers and missionaries. As a faithful Hindu, he was unwilling to accept Christian dogma. In Jesus, however, he recognized and revered one of history's great prophets of nonviolence. His criticism of contemporary Christianity was the failure of most Christian to embody the radical and revolutionary faith and action of Christ.
The South Asian edition includes a new preface by Robert Ellsberg titled, "Without Gandhi I would not be a Christian". It also includes a scholary article written by Rev. Dr. William Emilsen about "Lead, Kindly Light", which as Gandhi's favorite hymn.
The book originally published in the United States as Gandhi on Christianity in 1991, by Orbis Books, Maryknoll, NY 10545 USA.
Robert Ellsberg is the publisher of Orbis Books and author of several books, including All saints, The Duty of Delight: The Diaries of Dorothy Day and Bleed Among us.
