Centre for Gandhian StudiesGITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences, BengaluruInternational ConferenceGandhi and The Contemporary WorldJanuary 9-10, 2025Keynote Speaker: Prof. Akeel BilgramiColumbia UniversityLast date for Conference Registration: December 15, 2024The life, works, and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi have long been the focus of scholarly inquiry, with a significant body of literature—comprising books, articles, and manuscripts—published globally each year on various facets of his worldview. Academics continue to engage with Gandhi’s life and practices, particularly in addressing contemporary challenges such as ecological crises, economic inequality, and socio-political injustice. Nonetheless, a discernible gap persists between academic analyses of Gandhian thought and their practical application, prompting critical questions: To what extent do Gandhi’s ideas, philosophy, and practices retain relevance in today’s rapidly evolving world, shaped by technological advancements and digital transformation? The key focus of this international conference is to engage with this complex and evolving landscape critically. The conference aims to assess Gandhi’s relevance as a historical figure and a thinker whose ideas still offer significant solutions to present-day problems. By facilitating multidisciplinary dialogue, the conference will provide a platform for scholars, activists, and policymakers to engage in rigorous discussions on the continued applicability of Gandhi’s ideas in the modern world.
