Ashram - A Laboratory

This ashram was an experimental field for Gandhiji. This was his home during the last 12 years of his life. He guided the nation to independence with the weapons of truth and non-violence. Following his example, later on, many more countries became independent in the world.

Gandhiji tried to convert the individual pursuit for truth and non-violence, as was practiced by saints in olden days, to a cumulative effort in serving the society. Not only for attaining salvation, but even for serving the community, people should follow certain discipline in their lives.

Gandhiji wanted to develop the self even in the poorest of the poor and with this aim, he himself lived a very simple life based on voluntary poverty and simplicity.

Everybody has a purpose and a place under the sun. He devised various programmes so that everybody feels useful and be self-reliant in his life. He gave equal emphasis to the purity of ends and means. Sevagram was his base for training young workers both men and women, to serve the society.
